Make sure the drive is 1) FAT32 formatted 2) empty and 3) has nothing else on it but the firmware file. No folders, etc.

If you’re unsure if the drive is fat32 formatted, launch Disk Utility and select and erase the drive. You’ll get the option of what formatting to use, fat32 is default unless it’s a large drive. (I successfuly use a 32GB drive)
